A Decade in the Outback: Celebrating 10 Years of Service
This year, we’re proud to celebrate an incredible milestone for Store Manager couple Janine and Brian, who mark 10 years with Outback Stores.
Married for 38 years, with two children and two grandchildren, Janine and Brian have spent the past decade not only working together, but embracing a lifestyle many would never imagine. What began as a spontaneous decision – after spotting a job opportunity – quickly turned into a life-changing journey.
“We decided to get out of the city and try outback life, which we have never regretted,” they shared.
Starting in the Central Desert and now working across the Top End, the pair have managed more than 31 stores across the Outback Stores network, bringing their combined experience in retail, office work, and over 20 years in the retail industry to communities right across remote Australia.
Their journey has been anything but ordinary.
From a short three-day relief placement in Titjikala to spending two and a half years in Nyirripi, Janine and Brian have experienced the full spectrum of remote store life. Along the way, they’ve built strong connections with communities, colleagues, and cultures that have left a lasting impact.
What we enjoy most is visiting different communities and experiencing different cultures. We’ve met some amazing people from all walks of life and made lifelong friends.
While every community has offered something special, places like Bardi Ardyaloon on the Dampier Peninsula stand out for their stunning location and welcoming locals. More recently, their time in Yarralin left a lasting impression.
“Everyone there was so welcoming and friendly – we were very sad to leave.”
Like many in remote roles, their journey hasn’t been without challenges. Staffing shortages, equipment breakdowns, and the impacts of extreme weather – particularly the recent wet season – have tested their resilience.
“You can’t just call someone down the road to fix things,” they said. “Once we were told to go to the nearest McDonald’s to use the Wi-Fi – something that just isn’t possible out here.”
Despite these challenges, their approach has always been simple: work together, adapt, and support the community.
Everyone pitches in and does their best to get the job done.
Outside of work, they enjoy fishing, sightseeing, catching up with their family over facetime and when on annual leave, and continuing to learn from the diverse cultures they encounter.
After 10 years, their advice to others considering a similar path is honest and grounded:
“This is definitely not a job for everyone. Remote living can be as rewarding as it is challenging. Do your research – if you take the plunge, enjoy the ride.”
“It’s a unique and rewarding experience for those who can treat everyone as equals and roll with the punches each day.”
